Invest With Confidence Not Emotion

According to securities industry trade association Investment Company Institute there are approximately 60 million Americans who actively participate in a 401k. Traditional IRAs have an estimated 49 million participants and ROTH IRAs encompass another 20 million. Suffice to say that there are a lot of people preparing for their retirement!

Gain The Market Edge
How Traditional Investing Works

‘Follow the money.’ ‘Follow the leader.’ ‘Follow the crowd.’ ‘Follow your gut.’

Everyone has heard these phrases and I for one heartily agree that ‘Following your gut’ is the Divine’s way to guide us and it should never be ignored when it pertains to our personal life. ‘Following the market trend’ however is appropriate when analyzing and studying the equity markets.

Many investors ‘Follow the crowd’ but the quandary is always – what crowd do you follow?

When someone unfamiliar with investing becomes involved with their company’s retirement plan, a 401K let’s say, they may ask the ‘Financial person’ who oversees new enrollees’ investment for advice. They may ask a coworker, or they may place their future into what sounds ‘nice’! All too often there is no-one available who is qualified to guide someone or offer advice in what funds or alternatives to choose.

There is an alternative to the above dilemma and that is subscribing to GaneWisdom/Market Edge.

Many financial advisors suggest, encourage actually, to buy a good solid investment and hold onto it. If that is what someone is comfortable with, has the time to wait out market reversals, and has no interest in overseeing or managing their money, buy and hold is the best course of action.

Following the trend is not forecasting the future -

something no one can do with 100% accuracy. It is about riding the wave, taking advantage of apparent upswings for as long as they continue and hopping off the train when the trend fizzles out or when a sudden reversal in the trend occurs.

What are some of the consequences of ‘going it alone’?

To answer that lets take a look how a very simple approach of investing takes place:

A person buys a stock because they believe that someone will pay more for it than they did. As other people notice the stock rising, they buy before it gets too expensive. This buying (and selling) continues as the price increases. This is an example of ‘Market Sentiment’ in its simplest form. This is an ‘uptrend’ taking place.

But alas, there comes a time when someone somewhere will be holding a one-time valuable stock that no-one is interested in any longer. Now a ‘downtrend’ is forming. Instead of selling and taking a small loss our investor decides to hang in there (this is an example of relying on emotions – never an intelligent thing to do concerning investments).

At some point the pain will become unbearable and they will sell, perhaps at a huge loss. ‘Believing’ that the stock would come back (never considering they could buy back in if it began to show life again). It didn’t.

How GaneWisdom/Market Edge Works

About 66% of 401k assets are invested in Mutual Funds and of that figure, approximately 47% is in what are known as ‘Equity Funds’. These are mutual funds that invest in stocks – large companies, small companies and companies in between. Simply put, a mutual fund is a portfolio made up of many companies with the idea that the risk factor is spread among many, perhaps thousands of companies that make up the fund.

Success Without Experience

The challenge for investors, especially with little or no knowledge of the stock market, is knowing what to ask. Questions like the fund’s investment strategy, what the fund portfolio comprises, the percentage of industries making up the fund, and the past performance of the fund itself. These are just a very few of the important factors in determining a proper ‘buy and hold’ strategy.

When should I purchase it? What should I purchase?

When is the best time to buy it? When is the best time to sell? What kind of fees or commissions am I looking at? Will my broker keep in touch with me? These are valid questions to be certain, however – what should you do?

How do I make moves in my account?

Beginning in 2005, many mutual fund companies began implementing restrictions on trading. Although not fans of moving money in and out of their portfolios, most fund managers were of the kind to ‘grin and bear it’ so these fund families allowed trading between their funds at no commission and no fees. In 2003, Elliot Spitzer, the then attorney general of New York began a deep investigation into the mutual fund industry. Specifically, the allegations - which were eventually verified - that many mutual fund companies were allowing their very large clients, such as pension funds and money managers with billions under management, to trade after market hours (9:30am-4pm). Of course, not only did this give an unfair advantage to these companies but it was totally against regulatory policy. Today, many mutual fund companies limit the number of transactions their shareholders can initiate, however every fund family is different.

In order to apply the advantage that GaneWisdom/Market Edge offers by it’s analysis, it is important to know the trading practices allowed in your particular account. There could be a certain limit – say 10 to 15 transfers per year – or there may be no limitation, again, depending on the fund group. Since frequent movements between funds are not usually necessary and are rare (allowing for the possibility that they may be announced) utilizing the analysis we offer should be complimentary to your individual money management.
The procedure to initiate movements and transfers between your subaccounts is very simple and can be done either by phone or online. If you have not yet set up an online account with your particular plan and you decide to subscribe to our service, now would be the time to do so. Each time a transfer is completed, a statement from your plan will be issued to you for your records.

When do I buy (or sell)?

This is the $500 million dollar question!

We will issue out our analysis on Sunday evening by 10 PM Eastern Time. Usually before. We will also issue updates whenever needed. As a subscriber to GaneWisdom/Market Edge you will be updated on our latest examination and interpretation for you to judge when or if you should follow our opinion. Since we follow the trend of the market, we do not allow emotions to dictate our analysis. Instead of picking a future price that a particular fund (or stock for that matter) would be judged to sell, we follow what the trend is showing us. This also applies to issuing a buy signal.

There are indicators that can show a positive short-term trend and that analysis is then passed on to our subscribers for them to consider as well. In short, we try to give our subscribers the advantage of peace of mind.
